An MRI uses a strong magnetic field along with radio waves to create a detailed and cross-sectional image of internal organs and around the structure. The structure of the machine holds a table and a circular machine behind it. When the patient lays down on the table, it slides into the machine to run the scan.

A brief explanation of the working process of an MRI scan:

There are two types of magnets used in the MRI scan, which are the most important parts of an MRI scanner machine. According to medical science, the water molecules in the body are randomly arranged, but the first magnet in the MRI scanner attracts all those molecules in one direction, either north or south.

While the second magnet is used to create a magnetic field to change the alignment of those molecules. The second magnet is quickly turned on and off to take pictures of aligned and moving molecules.

A knocking sound generates when the electric current passes through gradient coils.

MRI scanner can be used in the following conditions:

  • Breast cancer screening
  • For certain types of heart problems
  • To find out the conditions of abdominal organs and liver disease
  • To evaluate pelvic pain in women caused by fibroids and endometriosis
  • To scan suspected uterine anomalies in women to counter infertility problem
  • For knee and back injuries

Are there any side-effects associated?

There are very rare conditions when a patient or doctors reports any side-effect from an MRI scan.

However, the patient can experience mild headache, nausea, hives on the skin, and itchy eyes.

The patient can immediately report to the technician when experiencing adverse reactions.

Procedure for MRI scan

When a patient is comfortably laid down on the table, the technician operates the machine from an isolated cabin. The technician gives instructions via the intercom to make the patient comfortable. The patient is instructed to stay still so that the perfect images can be created. If the patient feels uncomfortable, he/she can ask the technician to stop the scan.

Manipal HealthMap uses advanced MRI machines to give you the most accurate images of the current tissue and organ condition.
